About Me

Subhash Chandra Sharma is a clinical psychologist based in Nepal who has been working in the field of mental health for the last 25 years. Throughout his career, he has developed an in-depth and unique perspective on the strengths of human beings as a whole. He is a strong believer that each individual possess a tremendous amount of psychological strength and that they are immensely resilient fom within. He believes that social inequalities, societal pressures, and family dynamics play a crucial role in shaping each individual’s personality. Every individual brings their own unique style of coping with the stressors they encounter in life. He believes that biology, including genetic vulnerabilities, play an important role in providing a template of temperament, which interacts with family and societal forces, ultimately determining how resilient or vulnerable a person becomes psychologically.

With rigorous academic training in assessment and intervention modalities, along with years of experience working with clients facing various mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, addiction, and suicide, he brings a unique perspective to his clients. His approach allows him to bond closely with them. He never views clients as suffering from untreatable mental health conditions but helps them understand the dynamics of the symptoms they experience. He offers techniques to transform their weaknesses into resilience and strengths, enabling them to function better as individuals and become active, productive members of society. With a thorough understanding of psychological disorders, his work has a significant impact on the lives of his clients.

In a country like Nepal, which has faced numerous challenges such as the COVID pandemic, earthquakes, and frequent natural and man-made disasters, combined with the critically low number of mental health professionals per 100,000 people, Subhash is trying his best in supporting his clients by various means. Through his clinical services, the blogs he writes, and his work in the mental health field, he emphasizes individual and community well-being. He offers counseling and psychoeducation to help bridge the gap in mental health awareness, services, and education.

Subhash is also a professor of clinical psychology and has been teaching medical and non-medical students since completing his degree in clinical psychology. He is involved with several institutions and organizations, including the Institute of Medicine (IOM), where he completed his academic degree, and Kathmandu Medical College, Sinamangal, Kathmandu, Nepal, where he practiced for around 21 years. He is currently working as the Managing Director of Center for Mental Health and Counseling Services Nepal (CMCS Nepal), a sister organization of Center for Mental Health and Counseling Nepal (CMC Nepal).

Education

Subhash completed his schooling from Ratna Rajya Higher Secondary School n Taulihawa, Kapilvastu, Nepal now in Lumbini Province. He studied in Gorakhpur, India before joining Buddha Padma Higher Secondary School and then Ratna Rajya Higher Secondary School to complete his School Leaving Certificate (SLC). He came to Kathmandu then and joined Siddhartha Vanasthali Instituteto study Intermediate in Science. He Joined Trichandra Multiple College in Kathmandu, where he studied Psychology. After completing his Bachelor's Degree in Abnormal Psychology, he completed his Master's Degree in Psychology from Central Campus, Kirtipur, Tribhuvan University. After completing Master's Degree he worked for few years in different roles such as a Research Assistant, Trainer, photographer, and IT Instructor until he joined MPhil degree at Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. He graduated in 2001 and started working a the Department of Psychiatry Kathmandu Medical College, Sinamangal, Kathmandu, Nepal initially as a Tutor and then later as an Assistant Professor. During this longest stretch of his life, from 2001 till 2021, he mainly was engaged in clinical activties at the Department of Psychiatry, Kathmandu Medical College. He played a pivotal role in establishing Kathmandu University Medical Journal (KUMJ), the official journal of Kathmandu University from 2003 to 2011 until when it was handed over to Kathmandu University, School of Medicine. He still serves Kathmandu Medical College as a Visiting Professor.

Memberships

Subhash during his career in Kathmandu Medical College, was an active member of Medical Education Department. He oversaw, besides other activties related to medical education at Kathmandu Medical College, publication of Journal of Kathmandu Medical College and KMC Times. Subhash Chandra Sharma along with other notable figures in Medical Education in Nepal such as Professor Dr. Hemang Dixit, Prof. Dr. Jagdish Prasad Agrawal, Professsor Dr. Pradep Vaidya and others founded Association of Health Profession Educationist Nepal (AHPEN). AHPEN was registered with the Government of Nepal as a social, non-profit organization in the field of Medical Education in Nepal. Subhash served as an executive member in Perinatal Scoiety of Nepal and is currently a life member of the scoeity. Subhash Chandra Sharma along with his colleagues at the Institute of Medicine founded Nepalese Association of Clincial Psychologists (NACP) in 2014. Subhash was the founder General Secretary of NACP. Subhash became and served as the President of NACP from 2021 to 2023

Work Experince

Subhash Chandra Sharma is a clinical psychologist and mental. health professional with extensive experience in various roles. He started his work as a Research Assistant in the Mental Health Project which was a part of United Mission to Nepal. He worked as a tutor, lecturer, and then an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Kathmandu Medical College, where he practiced his academic and clinical expertise. He currently serves as the Managing Director at CMCS Nepal, a sister organization of Center for Mental Health and Counselling Nepal (CMC Nepal), where he leads initiatives to enhance mental health services in the region. He has worked in various roles such as a clinician, research consultant, project coordinator, trainer, and others

Throughout his career, Subhash has worked as a clinical psychologist for renowned organizations, including CMC Nepal and the Center for Psychological Health & Emotional Wellbeing Pvt. Ltd. (CPH Nepal). His work extends to school mental health programs, where he has developed training modules for teachers to identify and manage psychological issues in schoolchildren. He also leads parent sensitization programs and conducts conferences and talks on child development.

In addition to his clinical practice, Subhash has contributed to several research projects, including the “Study of Mental Health Indicators of Nepalese Mothers” and training initiatives like the "First Year of Life – Stimulation Program" under the United Mission to Nepal. He has trained participants from various NGOs and INGOs, in various topics and areas such as counseling skills, stress management, school mental health, supporting vulnerable populations such as children at risk.

His experience also includes psychological assessments and interventions for children and adolescents in schools and colleges, as well as teaching psychology at Trichandra Multiple College. With a background in IT, Subhash also served as a Senior Computer Trainer at MicroNepal Computers, demonstrating his versatility and leadership in both psychology and technology. He has charied and co-chaired various sessions in national and international conferences.
